Coraline is Neil Gaiman’s best book, a thriller that mixes innocence and courage in a dark and magical world.

CORALINE BY NEIL GAIMAN

Coraline has a special place in my book collection; it’s no wonder I have two copies, one in Portuguese and the other in its original language, English.

This was the first book by the British author Neil Gaiman that I read, and I think I was lucky. I’ve read other books by Gaiman, but I can’t classify all his novels as easy reads.

An example of this is American Gods, which, when I read it, left me with the impression it was written by someone else entirely.

Coraline has something truly special; while it possesses the innocence of a little girl whose adventurous spirit led her through a magical door to another world, she didn’t go to Narnia, but she could speak to animals in a dark world where the Other Mother, with her button eyes, patiently waited for her to fall into her web.

Her adventurous spirit leads her into a series of misadventures.

By her side is a cat, with no need for a name, intelligent, bold and talkative. His topical presence counterbalances the innocence of the little girl who accepts the mission of saving her parents and the spirits of the children who came before her.

Coraline was released in 2002, after a long creative process that lasted about ten years. Neil Gaiman began writing the work in the 1990s and, over this period, he refined the narrative, the characters and the dark universe that so fascinates readers of all ages. This dedication results in the book’s unique atmosphere, where a girl’s courage in the face of the unknown stands out on every page.
